Thanks to all the folks who came out to Martyrs and The Whistler in May, especially you booty shakers at The Whistler, you know who you are! The OP is going on hiatus in June so our keyboard player can complete a procreating that was started almost 9 months ago, but we’ll be back in July and August, with these dates, add em to your calendars:
July 12 – Reggies Music Joint w/ Emefe
July 19 – Chicago Summerdance!
July 27 – Morseland
August 18 – Glenwood Avenue Arts Fest
August 29 – Lakeview Summer Stage
…and some more shows in the works!
Meantime, here’s a recent clip to tide you over. King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown!
Not crashin, just burnin. The Opposition party comes out two times in the first ten days of May: headling Martyrs on May 1 with JR Miller Project and Blast! Then on the 9th we resurface to fill the stage and sample the potable mixes at The Whistler all night.
The OP is back this spring, with some new tunes, new shows, and new instruments – in the way that a vocalist refers to his or her voice as an instrument. And well they should, as we’re lucky to be joined at our next gig by Mark Ford and Typhanie Monique on vocals. They’ll be joining us, along with Avo Randruut and his DePaul African Ensemble on Friday, March 3 at the beautiful DePaul Concert Hall.
No, it’s not a planetarium (though that would be a fun show). It’s a night of afrotronica brought to you by Soulphonetics, Windimoto, and The Opposition Party:
What more is there to say? The OP is playing the fine Glenwood Avenue Arts Festival this Sunday, Aug 21st. Come out and partake of the lake, the artists, the shops, the music. We’ll be on the Main Stage at Morse and Greenview, playing at 4 pm.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the Six Corners BBQ Fest! The OP had a nice thrill that day when none other than Alejo Poveda jumped up on stage to join us for a few tunes. Check out the video on youtube.
The OP head back to Logan Square’s Whistler, this Thursday, June 2 to pack the stage full of horns, rhythm, and percussion. We’ll go on at 10pm with two sets of afrofunkdub sounds. Get in for free, get lubricated with The Whistler’s fine cocktail selection, and get loose to the vibes.
We’re excited for our Saturday, May 21 spot opening for Rubblebucket at Martyrs! You can check out this high-energy act and download their new album here.
On Friday, April 15, The Opposition Party & Soulphonetics take over Morseland in Rogers Park! Great beer selection, tasty kitchen treats, and live afrofunkdubjazz.
It was great to hear Trombone Shorty on the latest edition of American Routes! Lookin forward to opening for him & his band Orleans Avenue on April 4 at Lincoln Hall!
